Athens Farmers Market

One of my favorite places in Athens is the Athens Farmers Market. No matter what weekend, the market offers produce, flowers, homemade candles, coffee, tea, kettle corn, pizza, bakery and more.

“The Athens Farmers Market serves as a wonderful venue for trade and conversation. It also serves as a kind of food business incubator for small producers attempting to start a new enterprise… with strengthened support from area residents, the city of Athens, Ohio University, and the local business community.”Athens Farmers Market

It truly is an awesome experience. I love the camaraderie between the farmers and their customers; they’re more than just customers – they’re friends, neighbors and supporters. I also love the smells of kettle corn and freshly brewed coffee. Not only are you purchasing quality items, you’re also supporting the local economy.

During my trip on Saturday, November 10, I purchased sweet potatoes, mixed salad greens, a bushel of cilantro, fresh mozzarella and the infamous ‘Thai Box’. Simply put, the ‘Thai Box’ from Avalanche Pizza is perfection. While the ingredients vary each week, its fresh, flavorsome taste never changes. This week included napa cabbage, bok choy, broccoli, sunflower sprouts, peanuts, garlic, lemon grass, sesame, pickled daikon, cilantro, ginger, etc. I highly recommend it!

The Athens Farmers Market is located inside the Market on State Street and opens every Wednesday and Saturday at 10 am. If you ever pass through Athens, plan to stop by!

I took tons of pictures, too! Check out my Athens Farmers Market photo album here!

Congratulations to the Athens Farmers Market for 40 years, 1972-2012!
